Custom ERP vs Odoo vs ERPNext is mostly a question of how standard your process is. Odoo and ERPNext are capable general-purpose ERPs: if your business runs the way most businesses in your trade do, configuring one of them is usually faster and cheaper than building. A custom ERP earns its cost when your process is unusual and central to how you make money. Prices below are from Odoo's and Frappe's own pricing pages, checked on 22 October 2026.
Treevoxa builds custom ERP, so we have a stake in this. We still recommend Odoo or ERPNext when they fit.

What each one really costs
Odoo charges per user per month for its Standard and Custom plans, and every app is included in a single fee. Hosting and support are included on Odoo Online. For implementation, Odoo sells Success Packs to companies under 50 employees and sends larger companies to partners. The cost to watch is users: twenty users on Standard is twenty times the per-user price, every month.
ERPNext has no licence fee at all. You can host it on your own server, or use Frappe Cloud from $5 a month for a single site on shared servers. Frappe does not implement ERPNext itself; certified partners handle setup, customisation and migration, and that is where most of the money goes.
A custom ERP has no licence or per-user fee, but you pay for every feature that is built, and for changes afterwards. For scale, Softvirtue, a Lahore firm, publishes from PKR 80,000 for a single module and PKR 150,000 to 400,000 for a multi-module system (checked 22 October 2026), while international agencies quote tens of thousands of US dollars per module. Our custom software cost guide lists the sources.
There is a fourth route between these: buying a ready system with its full source code. Treevoxa sells PharmaFlow, MatrixHR and RE-ERP that way for USD 2,500 or PKR 700,000 one-time. See ready-made systems with source code.
Pakistan-specific questions to ask
Whichever route you take, ask these before you sign:
- Tax. How are FBR and provincial sales tax rates set up, and who updates them when the budget changes?
- Payroll. Does it calculate income tax slabs, EOBI and provident fund for Pakistan, or will that need custom work?
- Banking. Can it produce a salary or payment file your bank accepts?
- Costing. Can it cost products the way your factory does, for example FIFO with overheads?
- Local support. Who answers when something breaks during Pakistani working hours, and in which language?
- Currency. Are licence and hosting fees billed in dollars, and what happens when the rupee moves?
Odoo and ERPNext can be configured for most of this through partners. Ask each partner to show you, on a test system, how they handle your answers.
When to choose which
- Choose Odoo if you want many standard apps (accounting, inventory, CRM, POS, website) from one vendor, hosted and supported, and you are comfortable paying per user.
- Choose ERPNext if you want open source with no per-user fee, are happy to pay a partner to configure it, and want the option to host it yourself.
- Choose a custom ERP if your process is unusual and is how you win, if you need tight integration with systems you already run, or if configuring a general ERP would cost more than building the part that is different. Our custom ERP development page explains how we scope one.
Many businesses end up with two: a general ERP for standard accounting and HR, and a small custom system for the one process that is different. That is often the cheapest answer of all.
