On ERP vs Odoo customisation cost, customising Odoo looks cheaper for teams of 10 to 30 people, according to published partner figures and our own five-year model below. Quoted Odoo customisation runs from about $500 for light changes to $100,000+ for enterprise builds. A focused custom ERP starts around $40,000, and mid-size builds run $200,000 to $500,000. We sell custom ERP development, so check our arithmetic.
The gap closes as users and customisation grow. In our model, custom works out about 5% cheaper at 100 users over five years, which is within the margin of error. Change the assumptions and that result moves either way.
Prices checked October 2026. Odoo changes its promotions and regional pricing often, so re-check odoo.com/pricing before you budget. The figures below come from third-party pages, not from quotes we have verified. Those pages conflict, and the drivers section explains why.
1ERP vs Odoo customisation cost: the short answer
Here are the quoted ranges side by side.
| Route | Quoted cost | Quoted timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Odoo, configuration only | $8,000–$30,000 implementation for an SME, plus licences | 4–16 weeks |
| Odoo with customisation | $500 to $100,000+ on top, depending on depth | Depends on scope |
| Custom-on-Odoo build | $50,000–$200,000 | 4–8 months |
| Custom ERP, small and focused | $40,000–$150,000+ | 6–18 months |
| Custom ERP, mid-size | $200,000–$500,000 | 6–18 months |
| Custom ERP, large | Into seven figures | 6–18 months or more |
Odoo wins when your processes are mostly standard. Custom wins when Odoo is heavily modified, has many integrations, runs industry-specific workflows, or has a user count large enough for per-user fees to compound.
Most firms with standard needs are better off with Odoo. If that is you, buy it and spend the saving on data cleaning and training. For a build-side view of the numbers, see our guide to ERP development cost.
2What are you actually comparing?
Most "Odoo vs custom ERP" pages set one product against the other. That blurs the decision. There are three options:
- Standard Odoo with configuration. Apps, settings, Studio fields and reports. No code.
- Odoo with custom modules. Python and XML written on top of Odoo to change or add behaviour.
- A custom ERP. Software built for your processes, with no Odoo underneath.
Option 1 is the cheapest by a wide margin and is right for many firms. For anyone with unusual requirements, the real comparison is option 2 against option 3, and that is what this article costs.
For a wider view that includes ERPNext, see custom ERP vs Odoo vs ERPNext. For the general buy-or-build question, see custom software vs SaaS.
3How much does Odoo customisation cost?
Quoted figures vary by depth of change. The tiers below come from Silent Infotech. Flectic gives an overall range of $500 to over $100,000. These are sellers' figures, not ours, and we have not verified them.
| Depth | Quoted cost (Silent Infotech) | Our reading of what it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Simple | $500–$2,000 | Custom fields, report tweaks, small layout changes |
| Mid-scope | $3,000–$10,000 | Automated actions, approval steps, a basic integration |
| Module-level | $10,000–$25,000 | A new module or a significant extension |
| Enterprise | $25,000–$100,000+ | Multiple modules, complex integrations, industry workflows |
Flectic separately puts a custom Python module that changes core logic at $15,000–$50,000+. That is the riskiest kind of change at upgrade time.
Treat the top tier with caution. Once you are paying $50,000 or more to bend Odoo, you are building software on someone else's platform and carrying its upgrade cycle.
Is the Odoo Studio no-code route enough?
Often, yes. Studio handles custom fields, simple views, basic automations and some approval flows. It will not handle complex pricing logic, heavy integrations or anything that changes how accounting or stock valuation works. If your list of changes fits on one page and nothing touches accounting, Studio is probably enough.
One source says Studio needs the Custom plan. See the pricing section below, and confirm with Odoo.
4Why do Odoo quotes range from $500 to $100,000+?
Because the quotes price different projects, and the pages rarely state the scope. The Odoo customisation cost you are quoted depends on six drivers, which explain most of the spread:
| Driver | Effect on price |
|---|---|
| Number of users | Licence cost scales directly. Training and data-entry effort scale too. |
| Number of apps | Each app means configuration, testing and data mapping. |
| Integrations | Each external system (courier, payment, ecommerce, EDI) is a separate small project. |
| Data migration | Clean data is cheap to move. Years of messy spreadsheets are not. |
| Region and partner rates | Hourly rates differ by market and by partner. See software development rates. |
| Amount of custom code | The biggest swing factor. Configuration is cheap. Code costs developer time now and upgrade time later. |
A 10-user firm using sales, inventory and accounting out of the box lands near the low end. A 100-user manufacturer with custom costing, several integrations and migrated history lands near the high end. Both are "an Odoo project".
5What does Odoo cost per user now?
Licence pricing has moved. Older pages quoting $9–$25 or $24–$38 per user per month are out of date. These are the current figures reported by third parties, so treat them as approximate:
| Plan | US pricing, July 2026 (ERP Research) | Euro pricing, 5 October 2026 (Skysize) |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | About $24.90 per user per month promotional, about $31.10 at renewal | €19.90, then €24.90 |
| Custom | About $49 promotional, about $61 at renewal | From €35.90 |
Three details matter:
- One App Free covers a single app. Anything beyond that moves you onto a paid plan.
- Monthly billing adds roughly 20–25% over annual billing.
- The promotional rate is a first-term price. Budget for the renewal figure from year two.
Which Odoo plan do you need for the external API?
Do not assume. Gilzor says the Custom plan is required for Studio, multi-company and the external API. Odoo's access terms have changed over time, and we have only that one source for the claim.
Before you budget, ask Odoo in writing which plan covers Studio, multi-company and API access for your setup. Our model below assumes the Custom plan throughout. That is the cautious case, and it is easy to adjust.
If you need integrations built, see our API development work.
6How much does a custom ERP cost?
The custom ERP cost depends on scope. Quoted ranges:
- Small and focused: $40,000–$150,000+. Palm Infotech sets that against $8,000–$30,000 for an Odoo SME implementation.
- Mid-size: $200,000–$500,000 (Gilzor).
- Large: into seven figures. Gilzor's overall range is $80,000 to $1.5 million+.
- Custom on top of Odoo: $50,000–$200,000 over 4–8 months (Octura).
Timelines differ too: 4–16 weeks for Odoo, 6–18 months for a custom ERP.
Then there is upkeep. Zehntech puts custom ERP maintenance at 15–25% of build cost a year. That covers fixes, small changes, security patches and framework updates. It is the line people forget when they compare a build price with a licence price.
To get a first number for your own scope, run it through the software development cost calculator. For wider price context, see custom software development cost.
7Is custom ERP cheaper than Odoo over five years?
This is our own model, not a quote. We costed one requirement two ways. The business is a distributor needing sales, purchasing, inventory and accounting. It also needs three custom workflows (landed-cost allocation, customer-specific pricing, an approval chain) and two integrations (courier and ecommerce).
Assumptions, all in USD:
- Odoo Custom plan, annual billing. Year one at the $49 promotional rate, years two to five at the $61 renewal rate. That is $3,516 per user over five years.
- Odoo implementation (configuration, data migration, training) of $15,000, $40,000 and $110,000 at 10, 30 and 100 users.
- Odoo customisation of $25,000, $45,000 and $80,000.
- Two major Odoo upgrades in five years, each costing 15% of the customisation spend in rework. That 15% is our rule of thumb, not a quoted figure.
- Odoo custom-module support of 10% of customisation spend per year.
- Hosting for custom code at $3,000, $4,500 and $9,000 a year. Custom Python modules generally need Odoo.sh or your own hosting rather than Odoo Online, so confirm the hosting rules with Odoo.
- Custom ERP build of $90,000, $150,000 and $300,000. Maintenance at 20% of build cost a year for years two to five, with year one covered by warranty. Hosting at $3,600, $6,000 and $15,000 a year.
- No inflation, tax or currency effects.
| Five-year cost | 10 users | 30 users | 100 users |
|---|---|---|---|
| Odoo licences (Custom plan, with renewal uplift) | $35,160 | $105,480 | $351,600 |
| Odoo implementation | $15,000 | $40,000 | $110,000 |
| Odoo customisation | $25,000 | $45,000 | $80,000 |
| Odoo upgrade rework | $7,500 | $13,500 | $24,000 |
| Odoo module support | $12,500 | $22,500 | $40,000 |
| Odoo hosting for custom code | $15,000 | $22,500 | $45,000 |
| Customised Odoo total | $110,160 | $248,980 | $650,600 |
| Custom ERP build | $90,000 | $150,000 | $300,000 |
| Custom ERP maintenance (years 2–5) | $72,000 | $120,000 | $240,000 |
| Custom ERP hosting | $18,000 | $30,000 | $75,000 |
| Custom ERP total | $180,000 | $300,000 | $615,000 |
What the table says about the five-year cost of Odoo against a build:
- At 10 users, customised Odoo is cheaper by about $70,000. A custom build cannot recover its upfront cost with so few users.
- At 30 users, Odoo is still cheaper, by about $51,000. The gap narrows as licence fees accumulate.
- At 100 users, custom is about 5% cheaper, by about $36,000. Per-user fees are now the biggest line in the Odoo column. A gap that small is within the margin of error for a model like this.
So is custom ERP more expensive than Odoo? Upfront, yes. Over five years, only below roughly 70 users in this model. That figure comes from interpolating between the 30 and 100 user columns, so treat it as a guide.
Is Odoo really cheaper once customised? At 10 and 30 users in this example, yes. At 100 users it stops being clear.
The result is sensitive to the assumptions:
- If custom maintenance is 15% rather than 20%, the 100-user custom total drops to $555,000, about 15% below Odoo.
- If your Odoo customisation is half our assumption ($40,000), the Odoo total falls by $72,000 to $578,600. Odoo is then cheaper again, unless your custom build shrinks too.
The crossover depends on user count and on how much of a custom ERP you would be rebuilding that Odoo already gives you.
This table covers cost only. At the end of year five, Odoo still bills you every month. The custom ERP is yours.
8What are the hidden costs of Odoo?
Beyond the table, these items surprise people:
- Upgrade rework. Custom modules must be retested and often rewritten after a major version.
- Data migration. Cleaning and mapping old data is usually underestimated.
- Training. Staff time costs money even when the software is easy to use.
- Third-party modules. Apps from the Odoo store may be cheap, but they can break on upgrade or be abandoned.
- One-partner dependence. If one agency understands your code, they set the price.
- The cost of leaving. Moving your data and processes out of Odoo later is a project in itself.
Bad customisation is the most expensive kind. Tatvamasi Labs flags core file edits, missing Git history and missing documentation. Our fuller list:
| Red flag | Why it costs you |
|---|---|
| Edits to Odoo core files | Upgrades overwrite them or fail. Every version becomes a rescue job. |
| No Git history | Nobody can see what changed, when or why. |
| No documentation | Only the original developer can safely touch it. |
| No automated tests | Every upgrade needs full manual retesting. |
| Custom logic held only in the database | Changes are invisible to version control and hard to reproduce. |
| One developer, no hand-over plan | You depend on a single person or agency. |
Ask any partner for a sample module and its repository before you sign.
What happens to Odoo customisations on an upgrade?
Odoo provides upgrade tooling, but a major version upgrade is still a project for you or your partner. Data has to be migrated and everything has to be tested. Any custom module that touches changed models, views or accounting logic needs rework.
As a rule of thumb, budget 10–20% of the original customisation cost per major version. That is our own estimate, not a sourced figure, and it is where the 15% in the table comes from. This is your Odoo upgrade cost.
Clean modules that extend Odoo rather than overwrite it, use standard hooks and have tests sit at the low end. Modules that patch core code sit at the high end, or need rewriting.
Who owns the code and can any partner maintain it?
With a custom ERP, your contract should give you the full source code, with no licence fee and no lock-in. If the code is documented and built on a mainstream stack, any competent developer or firm can take it over, and you can host it wherever you like.
Odoo modules are different. They run only on Odoo, and those that use Enterprise features may depend on a continuing subscription. Any partner can maintain them in theory. In practice, a messy module is hard for a new team to take on, and a well-structured one is not.
If ownership matters to you, look at ready-made software with source code, where you get the full code from day one. If you go the Odoo route, the practices above are what to expect from any Odoo development partner.
9When does building a custom ERP make sense?
Custom becomes the better buy when most of these are true:
- You have heavy modifications planned. If you are changing the core of Odoo, you are paying twice.
- You need many integrations, such as warehouse scanners, gate systems, a portal and two other platforms.
- Your workflows are industry-specific and Odoo treats them as exceptions.
- Your user count is heading towards 100 or more, so per-user fees compound.
- You want to own the code and avoid a licence you cannot walk away from.
- You are tired of working around the software rather than with it.
For more build-or-buy reasoning, browse our guides, or talk the scope through with our software consulting team.
10When is Odoo the better buy?
For most firms, Odoo is the better buy. It wins when:
- Your accounting, sales, inventory and HR needs are standard.
- You have a small team, up to roughly 30 users.
- Speed matters. A 4–16 week project beats an 18-month build.
- Studio is enough, and you rarely need code.
- You do not want to run and maintain software.
If that describes you, do not build custom. The licence fee buys development you would otherwise fund yourself.
11Does the currency or region change the cost?
Yes, mostly through exchange rates and partner rates rather than Odoo's own price. Odoo's prices are quoted in USD and EUR, so for GBP, AED, AUD and SGD, convert at the current rate and ask whether any quote includes VAT or GST. The AED is pegged to the dollar, so the licence maths is simple there.
Local partner rates are the real variable. Compare them in the US, the UK, the UAE, Australia and Singapore. Get at least two quotes in your own market. You can also weigh offshore software development against local rates.
12How do you decide between Odoo and custom?
Answer each question with "Odoo" or "custom":
- How much of your process is standard? Most of it: Odoo. Half or less: custom.
- How many users will you have in five years? Under 30: Odoo. Near 100 or more: custom.
- How many integrations do you need? As a rule of thumb, zero to two: Odoo. Five or more: custom.
- How much customisation is planned? A page of changes: Odoo. A list that keeps growing: custom.
- How important is owning the code? Essential: custom. Not important: Odoo.
If you answer "Odoo" four or more times, choose Odoo, keep customisation light, and put the saving into data cleaning and training. If you answer "custom" four or more times, get a custom quote alongside your Odoo one. A 3–2 split means a close call, so price both routes properly.
The verdict on ERP vs Odoo customisation cost from our numbers: customised Odoo is cheaper at 10 and 30 users. At 100 users, custom comes out about 5% cheaper, which is within the margin of error. At that size the choice rests on how far you will bend Odoo and whether you want to own what you build, not on price alone.
